Atherton Residence I

An immense grove of redwoods defines this Atherton property, and from the earliest design conversations, those trees became the generative idea for the house. Two tower-like volumes frame a formal entry bridge that crosses a dramatic water feature, the sound of water threading nature into the arrival sequence. Wood cladding throughout speaks directly to the color and texture of the surrounding trunks.

The ground floor distributes formal and informal life with ease: a living room and library flank the entry on one side, a formal dining room and expansive great room with open kitchen, family room, and casual dining on the other. A secondary pantry and an au pair suite complete the service wing. Four bedroom suites occupy the second floor, the primary positioned in the most prominent location and outfitted with a generously scaled closet, a large bathroom, and a private study. Nearby, a smaller family sitting room offers a place for quieter, more intimate gathering. The basement holds a full entertainment level: media room, billiards, guest suite, massage room, gym, and a sports bar. Outside, a one-bedroom ADU doubles as a pool house, paired with a full outdoor kitchen and a large covered loggia scaled for dinner parties.
