This double lot carried a layered legacy: a cedar- This double lot carried a layered legacy: a cedar-shingled cottage, ceramic studio, heritage redwoods, and a cultural resource designation tied to its former occupant, an LGBTQ advocate. We honored that history while adding a board-and-batten gabled volume that complements the original cottage, connected through a light-filled glazed entry hall. Drawing on Irving Gill’s early modernist principles of clean cubic forms, low-maintenance materials, and courtyard living, we designed this home to respond to its context while embracing La Jolla’s indoor-outdoor lifestyle.  Organized as two double-story volumes, connected by a glass bridge and centered around a filtered-light outdoor foyer, we created a flexible living environment that supports aging-in-place while accommodating the client’s growing multigenerational family. www.johnlumarchitecture.com/project/baylor

This guest suite is part of an ongoing evolution o This guest suite is part of an ongoing evolution of an extensive remodel we completed years ago for the same clients in Upper Happy Valley, Lafayette. Intended as a compact retreat for the owners’ parents, it combines contemporary craftsmanship with a sculptural circular form and shou sugi ban cladding. Sited above the garage, it connects visually to the main house while preserving yard space and supporting multigenerational living with privacy and independence. Check out the initial remodel:

Here, our client’s headboard is built directly into the wall, the wood paneling doubles as a nightstand ledge, and the sconces are wired through the millwork.

We are deeply grateful to our generous hosts, Mike Light and John Lum, and to everyone who helped make the event so special, including Kate Sylvan and the LOBA team; guest DJs Chris Deam, Jordan Kurland, and Joseph Becker; Idell Family Vineyards; Madre Mezcal; Sally Robertson; Parkside Bakery; Johanna St. Clair; Ainsley Tharp and her dance troupe; and especially our wonderful volunteers, event underwriters, staff, and Board of Directors. As we celebrate the museum’s 43rd year, I’m reminded that community is one of our greatest sources of strength. For decades, the Bolinas Museum has been a place where people gather to encounter new ideas, engage with art, reflect on history, and deepen their understanding of one another and the world around them. The museum is a collective creative act—shaped by artists, volunteers, members, supporters, staff, and visitors. Together, we create something far greater than any one individual could build alone. Supporting artists, preserving history, and fostering community are at the heart of our mission. We’re excited for our upcoming programs, with exhibitions by Judy Molyneux and Amanda Gracia Blanco, a History Room exhibition on Bolinas surf culture, an exhibition drawn from our archives of independent Bolinas publications from the 1960s/70s, and a major retrospective of Paul Harris in the fall.
