A vertical expansion for light, privacy, and room to grow
When a growing family needed their home to evolve alongside them, they reunited the original project team to reimagine their space for a new chapter of life. Nearly a decade after their initial renovation, and with three energetic daughters in tow, the family found themselves craving more room to grow. The girls needed places to play freely and the parents sought privacy and a sense of order.
For this second iteration, the family expanded upwards, brought in copious amounts of daylight, and upgraded the interiors with a brand new, joyful look. From a nursery-centered design that placed the parents’ bedroom next to their then baby, to a multi-level house that gives everyone independence, this renovation entailed relocating the primary suite and study to a new third floor addition (away from the girls’ bedrooms) and adding play and work spaces on the lower levels.
To bring in more daylight, the staircase was approached as a light well. On the upper levels, open risers work in unison with the new skylights, filtering in sun. On the lower level, solid risers frame a seating nook, anchoring the space. A glass-railing ties the elements together, creating a sculptural presence.
Interiors embrace a sense of joy and sophistication. A whimsical yet refined color palette revolves around the client’s statement yellow dining table, setting the tone for a vibrant main level. The floor was transformed into a welcoming great room, complete with banquette seating, an open kitchen, and abundant storage.
The result is a completely new-feeling space with a cohesive layout, fresh colors, and amply daylight.
