Classical revival with a modern twist.
We designed this house for our client who wanted a traditional, Georgian house (the wife had grown up in the South) but also wanted a modern layout that would work for their active children, numerous friends, and entertaining that they enjoyed. In taking on this project, as we are best known for our contemporary work, we wanted to see how to design a house in a traditional language that would not only excel in its proportions and quality, but would also work for a modern family.
What resulted was a grand house, which is formal but in typical casual California fashion, features an open plan that opens directly onto a very large, south-facing backyard with a swimming pool and pool house. The house is organized with the entertaining rooms, the living room with piano alcove, dining room, and flying staircase in the front; the family room with open kitchen, conservatory-like breakfast room, his and hers studies, and the guest suite enjoying the rear yard, southern exposure. Other features include an outdoor loggia with fireplace, in-ground trampoline and bocce court.
The second floor features a generous master suite, with spa-like master bathroom, his and hers closets, and a secret attic room for star-gazing. Three additional bedroom suites and a laundry room complete this floor. The basement centers around a large game room with a sit-at bar, gym, media room, second guest suite, workroom and craft room. In total, the square footage is approximately 10,000 square feet.
