On the Boards.

Rising from a six-acre burnt parcel in Ukiah, this multi-building compound replaces a 1940’s ranch-style house that succumbed to the 2018 Mendocino Complex fire. We designed it as a year-round retreat for family and friends.

In an effort to accommodate more faculty on campus, @stanford asked us to subdivide a two-acre, two-home parcel located in the faculty subdivision, into nine separate lots. We explored several concepts, including denser, grouped housing, but working within the context of the neighborhood, settled on a conventional subdivision, yielding seven homes and two future home sites. Adhering to community input, who wanted to seamlessly blend the development with the eclectic historic neighborhood, our team created contemporary interpretations of the Cape Code, Craftsman, Farmhouse, Monterey, and Spanish revival styles. We went through several iterations before coming up with unique, custom designs.

Hi! My name is Djuna. Sounds like June. Pronounced joo-nah. My dads named me after the famous writer and artist, Djuna Barnes, who is best known for Nightwood (1936), one of the most radical and influential novels of the twentieth century. I probably won’t write any novels. But if you leave a book on the floor, I’ll most definitely chew the binding and rip through the pages.

I don’t have much experience as an office dog, yet. Luckily, I’m easy to train, eager to please, and supper cuddly.

When Emily Mughannam of @fletcher.rhodes describes this San Francisco renovation, the design brief is clear: “Space! Color! Happiness! And a yellow dining table.”

She’d first worked with the clients at the start of her career in 2012. “We both had just started families, and we connected through that,” she recalls. “They had just done a major renovation with architect @johnlumarch and Cameron Bryce of CB Construction. The original house is a 1900s Victorian that hadn’t been updated since the ‘80s. They opened up the small rooms, updated finishes, and redid bathrooms to make it current for the family.”

Fast forward to 2020, and the family of now five was cramped and desperately in need of more space. Instead of moving, they decided on an addition. “In San Francisco, the only way to add is to go up, so that’s what they decided to do,” Emily says. The original team assembled and crafted a plan to add a third story. Permitting took roughly two years, but in 2022 they were ready to break ground. “Or should I say,” Emily says with a laugh, “rip the roof off.”

Staircase Surprise! For this renovation, we expanded upward, adding a third floor. To improve the connection between levels, we rethought the vertical circulation and approached the staircase as a light well. On the upper levels, open risers work in unison with the new skylights, filtering in sun. A glass-railing ties the elements together, creating a sculptural presence.

Some years ago, we participated in the annual Bolinas Museum Hardly Strictly Mini exhibit which limits art pieces to 6” x 6” x 6”. Inspired by Marin’s fog-swept coast, we created Ghost Tree 1, using laser technology to cut a three-dimensional object through a series of plexiglass sheets.

Perched atop Golden Gate Heights with expansive views, we completely renovated a mundane, mid-century residence. We stripped the exterior of its rotted painted siding and replaced it with natural cedar and cement plaster. This Asian-inspired primary bathroom replaces a 1980’s design that was inconsistent with the mid-century house designed by Bay Area Regionalist architect Fred Langhorst. The clients requested a spa-like atmosphere with a free standing, ofuro-style bathtub, shower, and dry sauna.
