San Francisco Life

Where to Buy: Portola and Excelsior

As San Francisco continues to expand to meet the demands of its swiftly growing population, residents of the city’s south side are revitalizing their neighborhoods.  We’ve teamed up with hospitality tech giant Air BnB and the city’s leading (and local!) real estate group Paragon Real Estate to bring you a peek at two pockets of San Francisco ripe for development.

PORTOLA

As a little-known neighborhood leaning toward the outskirts of San Francisco, Portola maintains a simple community feel. This unassuming residential area is home to independent bakeries, family-run pharmacies, and beloved McLaren Park. Although it shares a border with two infamously rough neighborhoods, Portola is a quiet community that takes care of itself. Come take a stroll down San Bruno Avenue and stop by Four Barrel Coffee on your way to the Alemany Farmer’s Market on Saturdays. It’s always sunny in Portola, and a day spent enjoying this easy neighborhood in the sunshine will have you hunting for-sale signs in no time!

EXCELSIOR

This unpretentious San Francisco neighborhood sports colorful murals and a down-to-earth attitude. In Excelsior, greasy spoon diners share the sidewalks with corner stores and ethnic markets. Combine its no-frills vibe with the simple joy of relaxing in its neighborhood park, and Excelsior’s on-the-fringe location complements its unhurried pace. Overlooking the city from its perch in the hills, Excelsior offers a humble alternative to intimidatingly hip neighborhoods. The eclectic population in this district often have something funky planned for the community like Jerry Day, a tribute to Excelsior’s former resident Jerry Garcia.
