James Barker, RIBA

Project Manager

"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” - Edgar Degas

James originally trained, cut his architectural teeth and gained his professional license in Great Britain. After 7 years in London, where he worked for Chassay•Last Architects and Agate•Short Architects, he moved to San Francisco and has been at our office since 2006. Having been involved in 200+ projects both here and in London, he brings a wealth of experience to our team. When he is not wrangling with the City on your behalf, he can be found ripping around California on one of his collection of motorcycles.

James would readily describe himself as an ‘unapologetic Modernist’.

I can’t help but see dwelling space as either Cave or Treehouse: both appeal directly to our deep history and primal needs, both bring their own rich meanings and both spur the satisfying interplay between weight and lightness, safety or exposure, coziness or daring…
