With a distinct design aesthetic that reflects the unique personalities of both his business and residential clients, John Lum's projects are clearly distinguished by their creative use of materials and form, their elegant proportions and their vivid use of color.
Taking advantage of the warm weather in the Mission District, the house opens to extensive landscaped areas and roof terraces (watered through a rain-water catchment system). Natural light floods the house through clerestory windows that top the three-story, glass stairwell; operable windows throughout allow for natural cooling. The indoor pool, with doors that open into the garden, will be heated through a solar thermal system and will be filtered without chemicals.
As our resources become limited and the effects of global warming become more apparent, it is critical that we adopt standards of construction that move toward a more sustainable future. John Lum Architecture believes we can minimize harmful impacts to the environment by designing buildings that will last longer, cost less to operate and create surroundings where people can be healthy and thrive.
