John Lum Architecture, selected to design both the architecture and the interior of this year's Sunset Idea Home, located in San Francisco, tailored it to meet both the specific needs of the client/contractor and Sunset's extensive readership.
Livable and contemporary without being minimal, it features cutting-edge technology including: photovoltaic electrical generation, a wind turbine, gray-water system, "smart" computer-controlled house system, living roofs and ecological materials, yielding a self-sustaining house with zero-net energy usage.
The Sunset home will be used as a demonstration residential energy project for the City of San Francisco's Department of the Environment, as well as an exemplary home for the Pacific Coast Building Conference 2008.
Incorporation of green design and materials with low environmental impact compromises neither luxury nor aesthetics. Combining recycled woods and unconventional materials and strong colors creates a rich experience and easy livability.
